Why jewelry buyers ask for salt spray testing

Salt spray testing is an accelerated corrosion-screening method. Buyers may use it to compare finishes, check a production sample against an agreed requirement or investigate whether a metal component shows visible corrosion under controlled saline exposure.

It does not convert directly into a guaranteed number of months or years of normal wear. Real jewelry use also involves abrasion, cosmetics, sweat chemistry, cleaning products, storage and individual wearing habits. Test duration, sample preparation, inspection rules and acceptance criteria therefore need to be agreed before testing.

How a neutral salt spray test is carried out
